On Monday I went to Best Buy to get a new camera, and the associate assured me that the Sony would be much better for close-up photography than the Canon because the Sony has a Carl Zeiss lens. I was replacing a Canon that served me very well for the past few years (until the battery leaked and ruined it). All of the pictures on this blog prior my post yesterday were taken with the old Canon Powershot.
Now I'm not sure why I didn't just buy a new Canon Powershot to begin with. I returned the Sony Cyber-shot and got a new Canon Powershot. And I love it. I think you can see why! I took the image above with minimal fussing.
How-to: I used my Canon Powershot A3300 IS on a tripod in macro mode, with the color set to Florescent H (daylight florescent) lighting. Set the timer to 2 seconds to eliminate shake in macro photography from pressing the shutter release. Stick an Ott light to the right and in front of the piece and snap a few pictures. I think that's it. Use Gimp to set the white point, crop, and viola. I can get a little better pictures if I set up my photography lights, but heck, this one is good enough for me!
The image below was taken with the Sony in the same conditions, with same adjustments as the image above (except the Canon has a macro mode and the Sony doesn't), but on black instead of white.
