I wanted to take a break from designing my Cinnamon Serenade embroidery blocks, so last night I cranked out all nine of these little Sunbonnet Sue blocks in just a couple of hours on my machine. These are the first actual embroidery designs I've done on it. Until now, I've only done quilted designs.

I got the embroidery designs at Hatched in Africa (where I also got the designs I'm modifying to create my floral quilt blocks).
I went looking for history on the Sunbonnet Sue motif, and learned that it comes from a primer named Sunbonnet Babies, which was illustrated by Bertha L. Corbett in the early 1900s. These embroidery designs have the same character as the originals.
Sunbonnet Sue is a popular theme in redwork quilts, so there's a lot of tradition going on here. My colors are on the burgundy and rose side of the red family. The embroidered blocks are done on a small white on muslin print that gives them a little more texture than plain muslin. That floral print on the top of the stack is going to be the accent, with nine different burgundy/rose prints framing each Sue.
