Farmer's Wife quilt

When I started making quilts again last year, I started finding pictures and blog posts about Farmer's Wife quilts. Curious, I found a copy of the book at Barnes & Noble and picked it up. I didn't think I would on make it at first.I just thought the book was neat. Then I saw one made using more modern fabrics and I was hooked on the idea.

I decided to go with a single fabric line, and settled on Sweetwater's Noteworthy line by Moda. I'm a writer and a doodler, so it's perfect! I splurged and bought a fat quarter bundle of the entire line. This is the first time I've done that and it really felt indulgent.

By the way, the book does not come spiral bound. I had that done at Staples. Look for a post with tools and tips to make this project easier and more enjoyable.

I plan to insert fussy-cut pieces from the Bucket List print (shown on the top of the fat quarter bundle) in place of the cream-on-cream background prints here and there throughout the quilt.

My quilt will be displayed on the wall of my sewing room, and will be about 70" x 70" finished. There's no way I'm going to do this much work for a quilt that my cats can snag with their claws. And this way I can finish it up any size I want if I get tired of making the blocks.

Here's the layout in EQ7. I chose a straight layout instead of on-point so that the writing on the Bucket List patches is horizontal. I also think this layout looks a little more modern.

Notice the block in the top row, near the center, that looks like a Tie Fighter? That one makes me think of my son.
